Insect Resistance Management
Requirements
New biotechnology products and their
usage continue to dramatically
increase, vividly changing the way
seed is purchased and how grain is
marketed. With these changes come
increasing pressure from technology
providers to ensure that the
licensing agreements among growers
are followed strictly.

for the 2008 Insect Resistance Management
guidelines. This increased monitoring of
compliance is designed to ensure
that corn growers wisely implement
an Insect Resistance Management (IRM)
program when using Bt insect
protection products. Planting refuge
areas equivalent to at least 20
percent of each farm’s acreage is
thought to be critical in reducing
the potential development of
resistant insect populations. This
refuge needs to be within one-half
mile from YieldGard® Corn Borer
products, and must be adjacent to
products with the YieldGard® Corn
Rootworm trait. Click

YieldGard® Corn Borer and Herculex™ Refuge
RequirementsRefuge should be established as follows
-
On each farm, plant at least 20% of corn
acres with non-Bt corn. The non-Bt corn
can be treated with insecticides only
when the level of pest pressure meets or
exceeds economic thresholds. Sprayable
Bt insecticides must not be applied to
the non-Bt refuge corn.
-
Plant the refuge (non-Bt corn) within,
adjacent to, or near Bt corn borer fields. The refuge must be placed within
1/2 mile of the Bt corn borer field
(1/4 mile or closer preferred).
-
Can include the following corn options:
YieldGard Rootworm, Roundup Ready® corn,
conventional corn, but no other Bt
product for corn borer management.
|
YieldGard®
Rootworm Refuge Requirements
Plant a minimum of 20% non-CRW corn
refuge
Place refuge product adjacent to
or within YGRW field
-
Adjacent refuge field can be separated by
a road, fence, narrow grass waterway or
drainage ditch.
Refuge Management
-
Refuge products and YieldGard
Rootworm products must be
planted following the same
previous crop.
-
Can treat refuge for larval
CRW and/or other soil pests
with soil-applied,
seed-applied, or
foliar-applied insecticides.
-
Can treat refuge for late
season pests, e.g., corn
borer, CRW adults – however
the YGRW field must also be
treated.
-
Can include the following
refuge corn options: YGCB,
HX, Roundup Ready corn, and
conventional corn, but no
other Bt product for CRW
management.
|
YieldGard®
Plus
YieldGard Plus (YGPL) products are
stacked with YieldGard Corn Borer and
YieldGard Rootworm.
Refuge Requirements
Option 1: Common Refuge
-
Plant a minimum of 20% non-Bt corn
refuge that will serve as refuge for
both Bt technologies.
-
Place refuge within or adjacent to YGPL
field.
Option2: Separate
Refuge for
Each Bt Technology
-
Place corn rootworm refuge
within or adjacent to YGPL
field.
-
Place corn borer refuge in field
or within 1/2 mile (1/4
preferred) of YGPL field.
Refuge Management
-
Must use same crop rotation
as YGPL for refuge, but can
be any rotation for CB if a
separate refuge.
-
Can treat for larval CRW
and/or other soil pests with
soil-applied, seed-applied,
or foliar-applied
insecticides.
-
Can treat refuge for late
season pests, e.g., corn
borer, CRW adults – however
the YGPL field must also be
treated.
-
If YGCB is used as the CRW
refuge, then a separate
refuge must be planted
within 1/2 mile that would
serve as the corn borer
refuge; the corn borer
refuge can be treated for CB
or other corn pests when CRW
adults are present.

Refuge Planting Recommendations
Any non-Bt corn acres planted on a
grower’s farm near Bt corn can serve as
a refuge.
-
Plant a refuge on every farm where Bt
products are planted.
-
Plant the refuge close to, or at the
same time as, the Bt corn.
-
Manage the refuge the same as Bt corn is
managed. Reducing inputs or putting the
refuge on marginal land merely reduces
the effectiveness of the refuge.
-
Plant only non-Bt corn in the refuge.
Mixing non-Bt seed with Bt seed for use
in the refuge is not permitted.
-
Unirrigated pivot corners do not qualify
as refuge acres.
